Ethiopia Unveils First National AI Strategy

The Council of Ministers has approved the nation’s first overarching strategy for applying AI across sectors.

The 49-page policy framework outlines a long-term vision of positioning AI as a core enabler of Ethiopia’s development goals over the next decade. It was crafted with input from the British think tank Tony Blair Institute and the AI for Good Foundation. Read More.

Capital City Ends Paper Resident IDs

The Addis Abeba Civil Registration and Residence Service Agency (CRRSA) is phasing paper resident IDs. The agency will go entirely digital Starting July 2, 2024. Read more.  

Research Finds 91% of Internet Users in Addis Ababa Spend More Than One Hour a Day Online

New research conducted by the Center for Rights and Democracy (CARD), a local nonprofit organization, has found that 91 percent of internet users in Addis Ababa spend more than one hour a day online. Read more. 

Abyssinia Bank Launches Digital Debit Card

Bank of Abyssinia (BOA) Customers can now tokenize their physical plastic cards using BOA's Apollo Digital Bank Application and use the tokenized cards for contactless payments. The digitized (tokenized) cards can be used at both ATMs and POS machines. Read more.

CBE Adds New Mobile Banking Fee

The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia has added a new mobile banking fee and starting July 26, 2024, transactions between 10,001 and 50,000 birr will incur a new 3 birr fee. Additionally, transfers exceeding 10,000 birr to Telebirr and other wallets will see a fee increase from 10 birr to 15 birr. Read more.

Africa 118, a digital marketing and information service provider headquartered in Ethiopia, has secured funding from the GSMA Innovation Fund for the third time. Read more.

Ethio-Telecom, Addis Ababa University to Establish Smart Classrooms
