The Dangers of Ethiopia’s P2P-Driven Digital Economy

When business payments are masked as personal transfers, it becomes harder for policymakers and financial institutions to recognize the real scale of commercial activity.
This misclassification distorts economic indicators, stunts the development of tailored financial products for small businesses, and ultimately slows down efforts to build a more inclusive digital economy.
What appears today as a statistical oversight could soon turn into a structural problem and a missed opportunity to formalize, finance, and grow the very businesses driving Ethiopia’s digital transformation. Read More.

What’s on Our Mind
A few weeks ago, BYD announced a price cut for its Seagull EV, lowering the starting price to 56,800 yuan ($7,800). This marks a substantial drop from the previous price of 69,800 yuan ($9,500) for the non-Smart Driving Vitality Edition model.
Ethiopia is one of the emerging markets for the Chinese automaker, thanks to growing EV adoption and BYD’s recent partnership with MOENCO, which now serves as the official distributor of BYD’s electric and hybrid vehicles in the country.
However, it’s unclear how this price reduction will translate to the Ethiopian market. In 2022, when the government lifted taxes on imported EVs to encourage adoption, local car sellers surprisingly increased prices—contrary to expectations.
So, will the price of the BYD Seagull drop, remain unchanged, or inexplicably rise in Ethiopia? The answer should become clear in the next two to three months—the typical timeframe for shipments from China to arrive in the country.
